DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)---Some cell phone users will begin receiving emergency weather notifications on their cell phones via text messaging.
Under the Wireless Emergency Alert System, The National Weather Service will send warnings for tornadoes, blizzards, ice storms and flash flood warnings.
Cell phone users will not be charged for the alerts and you don't need to subscribe or sign up for an app.
The warnings will be sent to any newer-model cell phones in cell phone service areas.
"Wherever you are at you will receive warnings for that area," Mike Stewart, a Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Duluth said. "Now, you may receive warnings for the Duluth area, but you may be in Milwaukee. Now, if you're in Milwaukee, you'll receive warnings for the Milwaukee area."
Software updates will be available for phones that do not automatically receive the updates.
